Arm & Hammer Advance White Toothpaste...

New posts on Mondays!
New here? Start here...

Did You Know...
...that in the 19th century the use of charcoal was a very popular teeth cleaning method and the strawberry was considered to be a "natural" solution for preventing tartar and giving fresh breath? - toothpasteworld.com

To say that I used to love to brush my teeth as a child would be a lie. I'd rather have a root canal than brush my teeth at the end of the day. I just hated the grittiness of it all. I have found I have a very sensitive and acute honing in ability to hear the slightest of sounds. A certain
degree of "Spidey Sense" if you will. I can sense when a bug is in the room and I can hear my son tapping on something 2 rooms away, so I definitely heard way too much going on in my mouth when I brushed. My husband is always astounded by this power I possess. I think he secretly wants to sell me to the circus and make a few bucks...

Right. So I didn't like brushing my teeth as a youngster and some of that avoidance has sadly carried over into my adulthood. I'll do it now, but sometimes with an attitude. "Alright fiiiine I gueeeess I'll brush my teeth - but I won't like it one bit!" Until I smile into the mirror at the end and get that glinty shiny feeling. You know the one. Where you want to see that diamond star twinkle on one of your front canines kind of feeling? I absolutely live for that moment.

Doing research this week for the toothpaste I sampled and reviewed turned up some pretty interesting things. Some ugly, some not so ugly. Wanna hear about it? Here it goes.

Arm & Hammer Advance White Flouride anti-cavity Toothpaste

I have loved Arm & Hammer products since I was a young girl doing laundry for my family. With 4 brothers and no sisters I have done my fair share of laundry I would say, yet here I am...still with the laundry! I loved that baking soda could disinfect everything in our house at a moments notice on cleaning days. I love the smell of it actually. It just reminds me of clean. So when I moved out on my own when I was 20 guess who came with me? My moms boxes of Arm & Hammer AND her liquid laundry detergent. When I moved, nothing that wasn't nailed down was safe from my grasp. "I'm gonna need that, that, aaaand that. Thank you parental units!"

So imagine my glee when I found out they were making toothpaste. I figured well if they make such great detergent and powder then the toothpaste must be great too, right?
WRONG!
And here's the reason why, there is no problem with the result itself. I got the ooh aah clean feeling. It's the ingredients that make UP the paste that got me reeling. Mondays when I review things are stomach turning days for me. Especially if it didn't go so well. :oP So this Monday I was researching and researching and came across interesting things about the ingredients. Right this way folks....down the hall and to the left is ingredient NUMBER 1!

Sodium Flouride: used to prevent tooth decay but many sources that I came across really read this one it's rights because apparently this ingredient has been shown to have a dullifying effect on our brains. This is the same chemical that has been in use as rat poison since forever and a time ago and since it was being sold pre-1938 and before the FDA started testing the safety of products, then So Flo got "grandfathered" in as being safe. The FDA claimed that they went on the premise that all pre-1938 drugs were considered safe. Oh really? Really? We won't even touch the rumor of this chemical and it's possible Nazi ties. What the FDA did say was that fluoride was safe as topical use but not intended for ingestion. Hence the FDA warning labels on our toothpaste of "do not swallow". Because if you swallow alot of this (like little kids have the tendency to do so) you could suffer adverse effects including but not limited to nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, drooling, numbness or tingling, muscle stiffness, or seizures (convulsions) and possibly even death depending on how much you downed. (source: thenhf)

Mmmm....minty!

It also contains Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate. On OSHAs' website they say that acute exposure to this chemical can cause mild to moderate irritation of the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and respiratory passages. No wonder my daughter always gags and says "It's too spicy!" Oh and in case you were wondering they have all these lovely ingredients in the Kid's Crest toothpaste too. But it's in a glittery bottle to distract us from the now.

No wonder they tell us not to ingest this stuff. And that we should contact a Poison Control Center if more than the necessary pea-sized portion is swallowed for children. Because...it's actually poisonous to us.

So this weeks toothpaste gets two thumbs down and I'm throwing in a few rotten tomatoes for good measure just in case anyone from Crest is reading and misses my point.

And now I'm off to find a healthier alternative to the mainstream toothpaste. Do any of you have any that you trust and love? I KNEW there was a valid reason that I didn't like to brush. My Spidey Sense never steers me wrong. ;o)

My best,

Music: We have been hooked on these guys for awhile around here. This song is very enjoyable. The Avett Brothers "Will You Return". Look into them, they make beautiful sounds. How hot must the back of that bus been? Oh and would you please take the poll above the music player? I'm considering other music player options...thanks!

Red Looks Good On You!

New here? Start here...

Did You Know...
...that green peppers are just unripe red peppers? You can leave them out in a cool, dry space and they should ripen in about 2 weeks.

This weeks post is a recipe. I have made this particular Yum many times and it is delicious every single time. I know you will love it. It's loaded with flavor and all natural goodness. It's great to make a huge batch and refrigerate it and snack on at your leisure. I've been sick all weekend and dreaming of eating healthy things. Seriously though, does anyone else have dreams of what they wish they could eat after they got better? Just me?

Okay onto the FOOD!

2 medium eggplants, peeled

1 red bell pepper, seeded

1 red onion, peeled (a regular onion will do also, just expect a much less potent oniony taste)

2 garlic cloves, minced

3 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

1 1/2 tsp kosher salt

1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 tablespoons tahini (I never put this in, but let me know if you try it)

3 tablespoons chopped parsley, plus extra for garnish

Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Cut the eggplant, bell pepper, and onion into 1-inch cubes. Toss them in a large bowl with the garlic, olive oil, cayenne and salt and pepper. Spread them on a baking sheet. Roast for 45 minutes, until the vegetables are lightly browned and soft, tossing once during cooking. Cool slightly.

Place the vegetables in a food processor (in my house, we call that a blender!) fitted with a steel blade, add the lemon juice and tahini, and pulse 3 or 4 times to blend. I leave mine pretty chunky. Taste for salt and pepper. Transfer to a bowl and add the chopped parsley. Garnish with extra parsley.

I don't have the particulars on the nutritional value but just know that it's really yummy and I'm pretty sure it's super healthy for us.

Enjoy, mangia! (Italian for eat...)

My best,

MUSIC: "Food Glorious Food" from the musical Oliver! Those poor boys - they just wanted something good to eat!

What's That Smell? Not Me!

New here? Start here...

Did You Know...
...there are appoximately 2 million sweat glands in our body? Without sweat, we would not be able to tolerate the heat our bodies would produce. - wiseGEEK

As many of you know, I have been on the search for the best all natural deodorant for awhile. Well, this week I am going to tell you about one that has fallen preeeetty close to the mark.

It's called crystal stick and not to be confused with Crystal deodorant - which I have tried and it was horrible, I think they actually PUT stink in the bar to be ABSORBED into the underarm. I lost a few friends!

Crystal Body Deodorant, Stick, 3.5-Ounces (Pack of 3)

Now I really like this stick. It's unisex, has NO Aluminum Chlorohydrate, fragrance free, hypoallergenic, non-staining (which is a big plus and I had to learn about the hard way). Get this - it lasts for over one year. 1 whole year! You can save a lot of greenbacks with this purchase. Can be used for underarms or feet...never tried it on the feet though AND it's 100% natural mineral salts. It's free of perfumes and chemicals. It's basically like the "salt of the earth" but for your underarms!

Useage: this can get tricky when you are away from home because you have to always moisten the top of the stone before each application. Which is sometimes annoying. Also, this is the same as others I have tried in that it takes a good while for this to dry so for at least 3-5 minutes you look like your either in the Madonna "Vogue" video or auditioning an interpretive dance piece for the "Walk Like an Egyptian" song.

Cost: I bought this on sale for only $5.59 (3.5 oz/100 grams) which I think is a great deal considering that it lasts a whole year and also did I mention that Amazon is trying to hawk theirs for $20.97?! I say later for you! If you can't find this in your local health foods store then try this yahoo shopping site which is selling it at a more affordable price of $5.35. Just type in crystal deodorant stick in the search box.

Overall, I really like this product. I am learning to have to bring it with me everywhere and sometimes have to use it morning, noon, and night. But to me that's a small price to pay. For the new post next Monday maybe I'll just talk about the yuck and science behind mainstream deodorants that I found and read up on. Any takers? Anyone interested in such a thing? I'm quite nerdy nowadays so I don't mind talking about 20 lettered chemical compounds, do you? ;o)

My best,

Musicality: The Surfaris "Wipe Out". The Beach Boys remade it, but both versions are stellar and always put the family in a good mood. Look for the second round of videos please. Just be patient...they switch each group of 4 vids around every 45 seconds.

Is This Really My Skin?

New here? Start here...

Did You Know...
...the average woman uses a dozen personal care items containing 168 chemical ingredients DAILY and men use about 6 a day with around 85 chemicals?
- from the book Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry by Stacy Malkan

"Ay, ay, ay!" as my French speaking mom would say whenever she came across something disagreeable - broken lamps, fingerprints in a freshly decorated cake, contents of her purse upturned and her lipstick missing only to find it after following the red brick road scribbled onto the floor from her bedroom to the bathroom down the hall...ahem...I digress (sorry mom!)

But that's a whole lotta oh-no to be putting into our bodies right? Right. So this week I am telling you about something that can help eliminate and replace approximately 10 yucky ingredients for 10 great and natural ones.

It's this 4 oz. Country Oatmeal All Natural Handmade Soap by Elizabeth Rose that my awesome sister-in-law got me while we were visiting recently (thanks T!)

AllNaturalCounrtyOatmeal.jpg

I really loved this soap. It's made of all natural ingredients such as saponified oils of olive, coconut, palm, avocado, shea butter, jojoba and castor oil. It has rosemary and lavender, ground oatmeal and ground vanilla. All these wonderful ingredients just translate into...Yum-o! I used this and I was expecting alot out of it and it delivered big time. I'm not one for overpowering scents, especially when I am putting it on my skin, and this scent is oh so subtle. You really have to look for the smell so don't worry about it coming around the corner before you do! It makes my skin feel like butter - I'm sure all of those oils helped with that - and there's no harsh after burn, or itch! It lathers just as good as any Dove or Ivory any day of the week too.

It's $4.95 for this 4 oz. bar and I say well worth it. Elizabeth Rose Soaps has many other things for sale too. On her site you'll find Acne soap (which got rave reviews in the testimonials so guess what I will be ordering very soon? Lately, I've been battling with the grown folk acne..hmm...stress much?), bath milks and salts, body oils, perfumes, even unscented soaps for those of you with sensitive skin. Go and check her out and tell me what you think.

What have you guys been using on your skin lately? Any tips on how to nip this adult acne too?

My best,

Music: Bobby Darin "Splish Splash"... no explanation necessary...just enjoy! Okay it's official there is something wrong with YouTube and Blogger being on the same page musically. If you click to the left on the Song of the Week and a song called "Live It Up" starts playing, you can stop it because obviously that's not Bobby Darin. If you wait a few minutes it switches over to the Bobby Darin videos. Sorry for the delay and confusion.

I Clean. Therefore I Am...

New here? Start here...

Did You Know...
...that your kitchen sink has more germs than your typical bathroom? - Health magazine top 12 germiest places article on msnbc.com

I really try to stay on top of the house. Sometimes it blows up like an unruly child and just runs amok. I have no idea who used ALL those dishes in the sink OR who wore all those clothes in one weeks time... but alas there comes that day where I must hunker down and line up all my supplies in a row and put on my up-to-my elbows yellow Mr. Clean gloves and I just lay into that dirt. Show it what's what and not to show it's grimy face around here ever again. Or at least give me a few days rest!

Looking for alternative cleansers led me to this gem of a bottle:

The type is a bit on the small side right? So let me enlarge it for you:

This product and Co. have a lot of things going for it...good looks, doesn't smell...it's 32 fl. oz. of all natural goodness. It's non-toxic, no fumes, hypo-allergenic, no phosphates, free and clear of perfumes and dyes. Now I know I reviewed a similar type product a few weeks back with the Green Works bathroom cleaner review but this is different. No, really! For one, it's not solely for the bathroom, it's all purpose so feel free to drag it from the attic all the way to the basement - depending on what you've got there. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the effectiveness of the Green Works cleaner and how quick it cuts through grime but the "fragrance" coming from that bottle can seriously choke you out. So the search led me to Sev Gen (who's got the time, really?). Their website is definitely geared towards "green" and they have a ton of cool things pertaining to families and keeping children healthy. I really admire that. I found this really informative video about interesting chemical facts by Dr. Alan Greene. The Co. offers a slew of other products as well such as: dish soap, laundry detergent, paper products, feminine care and diapers & wipes. So go check it all out.

Their motto is taken from the Great Law of The Iroquois Confederacy which states: 'In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.' Why don't more people and companies follow this same concept? Who knows where this planet would be?

I bought this at WalMart for around 5 dollars. Sorry I forgot to get the exact amount down. I will revise this after I do. I recommend this very much so. It doesn't smell like anything really and it got my kitchen counters looking super clean. This product was NOT tested on animals (leaping bunny approved) and contains no animal ingredients.

Sooo when you run out and buy a bottle for your 'tackle the trash' days drop me a line on how much you love it or - gasp - hate it.

My best,

Music: Corinne Bailey Rae "Put Your Records On". She's so sunny isn't she? I wish I had a British accent sometimes. Yah dont cha know? No wait, that's Minnesotan... I think YouTube or Blogger is being Punked this week and keep on putting up random nonsensical music videos that NO ONE requested. So if you see any other video up besides Corinne Bailey Rae I have no control over that and I apologize for that. Technology shmology!
